Behavioral Insights.
Hi there! You're receiving this email because you signed up to Behavioral Insights, a weekly newsletter by Kevin Anderson at the intersection of experimentation, analytics and behavioral science. Thank you for being here.
👋 Hi everyone, here is a new Behavioral Insights. In this week's newsletter articles on metrics that matter, customer obsession, lessons learned, unbundling, unconferencing and something that brought a smile to my face.
1. Building metrics that matter 💯
Good metrics are the foundation of a good product strategy and user experience. "Metrics help you do meaningful stuff, help you make rational decisions, minimize the impact of breakages, and help you truly understand your product." Pranav Pathak created this framework for coming up with great product metrics. There is even a worksheet to get you started.
2. Customer obsession 🔎
Jeff Bezos announced that he will step down as CEO of Amazon later this year. One thing we can all learn from him: focus on the customer. "For Bezos customer obsession was not just about passively listening to customers and giving them what they asked for. It was about understanding them and then inventing on their behalf. 3. Lessons learned: first 100 experiments at Videoland 📜
Lucas Vos shares 6 important lessons from the first 100 experiments at Videoland. Maybe the most important one (Jeff Bezos would have guessed it): "Experiments aimed to solve a recognized customer problem, recognized in our customer problem framework, have a much higher win rate ..." 4. Find quick, cheap, and easy ways to try ideas 🎧
From the Tim Ferriss podcast: "I've realized that the key to being successful is not how good your ideas are, it's how good you are at being able to find quick, cheap, and easy ways to try your ideas." — Marc Randolph, co-founder Netflix. That's why you need to experiment. Listen to the quote.
5. The great unbundling 📈
Benedict Evans produces a big macro tech trends presentation ever year. This year it covers: covid; the unbundling of retail, ecommerce, advertising and TV. Highly recommend to get a big picture perspective of what is happening. See his presentation
6. Event: virtual unconference 🎟️
In the run-up to a (hopefully) live CH2021 conference, Ton Wesseling is organizing smaller virtual events. This Thursday there is an unconference. Register here
