1. DETOUR act
Two US senators propose legislation to attack the usage of dark patterns by big online companies. It is called the DETOUR act: Deceptive Experiences To Online Users Reduction. And it will forbid online platforms with more than 100 million users from “relying on user interfaces that intentionally impair user autonomy, decision-making, or choice.” It clearly targets the big tech companies like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. And it asks them to install an Independent Review Board, publish all experiments on a quarterly basis and get prior consent from users for running experiments. [read more]
2. Amazon annual shareholder letter
Every year Jeff Bezos writes a letter to Amazon's shareholders where he explains some of his thoughts on running the company. This time some interesting ideas on the importance of experimentation and accepting failure:
"As a company grows, everything needs to scale, including the size of your failed experiments. If the size of your failures isn’t growing, you’re not going to be inventing at a size that can actually move the needle. Amazon will be experimenting at the right scale for a company of our size if we occasionally have multibillion-dollar failures."

4. FiveThirtyEight's Nate Silver on predictions
"Prediction is hard, especially the future" (quote attributed to Niels Bohr). Nate Silver explains what they do to make their predictions as accurate as possible. [read more]

5. Emerce Conversion
Afgelopen donderdag was Emerce Conversion, met als onderwerp Cultuur van Experimenteren. Ik heb ook een presentatie gegeven, mocht je de presentatie willen ontvangen, laat het mij even weten. Persoonlijk vond ik de presentaties van Tom van den Berg en Bart Schutz (beiden Online Dialogue) zeer sterk. [slides Bart en Tom]
